As the former Chief of Police, John describes his career path as being very similar to leading a global security operation. In both roles, it is essential to keep a constant grasp on emerging as well as real safety risks. With over two decades of experience in building sound security infrastructure, John Vinson understands that standing alone and standing your ground amidst criticism are absolutely necessary at times. In addition, he holds true to the philosophy that we must all stay accountable to our actions and earn the trust of the community that we are a part of.
Early Life & Education
Born in Michigan, John Vinson, Ph.D., attended Central Michigan University for his undergraduate studies. There, he obtained a B.S.B.A in Management before graduating and enrolling in his Master’s in Public Administration. Upon obtaining his Undergraduate as well as Master’s degrees, Chief John Vinson furthered his academia by obtaining his Ph.D. in Public Administration at Western Michigan University.
While pursuing Law Enforcement, Vinson began teaching undergraduate as well as graduate students. In fact, Dr. John Vinson has continued to teach at post-secondary institutions for years. His peers recognize him for Higher Education Leadership for the past 14 years. In addition, he also serves as the President of the IACLEA (International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators)
John Vinson is currently serving as the Assistant Vice President for the Campus and Community Safety at the University of Washington. He carefully chose his career path to be able to make a difference. In particular, he enjoys the energy of the higher education environment of college and university campuses. With well over 20 years of experience working in Law Enforcement, he continues to serve the campus community at large.
